EUGENIO GARCIA LOPEZ
Eugenio was born in the beautiful Turrialba Valley on the Caribbean side, surrounded by
rushing rivers, active volcanoes, and lush rainforests, into a typical middle-class Costa
Rican family. It was in this environment that his feelings and love for nature were born and
awakened at a young age.
At 16, he was accepted to represent his country in Operation Raleigh, an ambitious scientific
expedition around the world sponsored by the Prince of Wales, which ultimately convinced
him that nature and conservation were his calling and future career.
He studied general biology, ornithology, and natural resource management and
conservation at the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and the National Distance Education
University (UNED).
During his adult life, he has undertaken many projects, both personally and professionally.
He also worked for the Costa Rican National Park Service and as a field guide for local and
international companies, including many universities in North America.
Eugenio also had the opportunity to initiate an ecosystem restoration project in the
Talamanca mountain range, where, with the help of others, he was able to recover more than
800 hectares of grasslands that now teem with thousands of trees and wildlife.
Currently, he is the founder and manager of JourneySouth EcoTravel, a small ecotourism
company focused on environmental education and sustainable development, organizing
personalized trips throughout Costa Rica and other Latin American countries.
Finally, he and his close family have acquired a small tropical farm on the South Pacific coast
of Costa Rica, where he continues his personal development and the daily practice of
conservation, environmental education, scientific research, and nature protection.
